During the beginning of a project, please tell me what you do to "PLAN" for "Quality". Also, do you have any examples of a "Quality Management Plan"?

Quality management plan primarily consists of

    1. What will be your quality metrics for each of the phase
    2. Peer review, code review and external review, customer review approach
    3. Defect targets for the solution based past projects expereince
    4. What quality tools u will use to track quality measures

The most important part of any Quality Management Plan is ensuring that there is ownership pf the plan by all. It is not just the Quality Assurance and control team that are responsible for the results but also the producers.

For each type of deliverable, identify how quality will be reviewed and what consititues a quality product. A final approver is also identified.

The document is reviewed and approved by the delivery teams and the client so that everyone knows what is expected.

Robert, I can send you my organization's QMP processes and templates for your consumption. Please contact me at bryant.baker_at_state.de.us and I will reply with some documentation that, as a minimum, would be a thought starter for you. Also, does your organization have an organization-wide Quality Policy? If not (mine doesn't), part of the QMP includes a policy that you apply to your project.

Dear Bryant, as Liana said, I also would be interested in your QMP. I'm sponsoring a Master Thesis about Quality Management in Construction Projects, being made at Universidad de Carabobo, in Valencia, Venezuela, and believe that some kind of templates and guides like I think your QMP is would be very useful for the Thesis.

Thanks in advance for your atention

A Quality Management Plan for projects is the glue to ensuring that your project delivers the product or service that your client wants and needs. In construction projects the Quality Management Plan is a key aspect in conjunction with budget, schedule and resources. Currently on the $400 M project for which I am the Quality Contracts Manager, we have implemented a Quality Management System in which each contractor, consultant, sub-contractor and sub-consultant has its own Quality Management Plan which follows the overall QMP we devised for the entire project.

A QMP must be scaled to the size of the project. The more complete the planning is before embarking on a project the easier it is to manage quality when the work starts. Clarity is important as is details of roles and responsibilities. Expectations that must be achieved should be clear to everyone. And finally "buy-in" from everyone involved means the Quality Manager must actively promote quality in every aspect of their interactions with others.

There are also standards for quality assurance plans that detail what the contents should be. For example, IEEE Std 730 provides a standard for Software Quality Assurance Plans. There is also ASTM F2688 - 08 Standard Guide for System-Based, Customer-Centered Quality Plan for Manufacturers. Do an internet search and you will find lots of guidance in this area.

I feel Quality should be factored in every process..it should start from identifying the voice of the customer to KPIVs and KPOVs. The plan is supposed to be designed by the team; but that there is a format for a QM Plan....i really dunno...can someone give an input on this and furnish the whole house??????

Thank you everyone for replying. Since there is such a wide variety of responses, we are going to commission a team to create a Quality Plan Template and publish to our documents folder. I don't believe this will be a 1 template/standard for every type of project; however, perhaps it'll be a solid starting point.

Can someone provide me a real example, not a template of a Quality Management Plan? I mean, an example of a Quality Management Plan for an IT project with specific metrics and tools and checklists... Thanks in advance.
